This coming Saturday and Sunday the Board of Directors along with our newly appointed Junior Program Coordinator, Linda Gallagher, and our newly appointed Provincial Head Umpire, Jenn MacDonald will be meeting to plan the LBAA program of events for 2018. Helping them with the work, particularly for the Bowling Program are Committee members Roy Riege and Herman Cooper, and particularly for the Junior Program are Cecilia Gillespie, Gary De’Ath and Keith Wylie. Also assisting with Marketing ideas and updates to the website and database will be Keith Johnson.
As a result of the work we hope to accomplish this weekend, look for exciting announcements about dates and programs early in the new year! The 2018 season will be here before we know it.
The Canadian Indoor Singles Championships get underway this weekend with practice time and an opening reception on Sunday. The games are all next week concluding with the finals on Saturday. Representing AB for the women are Jenn MacDonald, Jan Robinson, Pat Vos and Claire Day and for the men are Derek Dillon and Roger Allen. Good luck to all the players! David Simpson, long time member of Stanley Park Lawn Bowling Club, was recognized for his many years of service to LBAA, at the Annual General Meeting in Red Deer. He received the Long Term Service Award for his many years of service as LBAA President and board member, for his contributions on numerous committees, for his years of growing our sport through his coaching, for his commitment to participating in many provincial competitions, and for representing AB at several national events as recent as this past summer. It is our hope that David will continue to be involved for many years to come and continue to contribute with enthusiasm and passion. Congratulations, David!

After a week in Point Claire, QC, playing in hot humid weather, the Mixed Pairs championship concluded on Tuesday. Christie Grahame and Mary Wright from BC secured the Gold medal after strong play all week long, but our own AB Roy Riege and Pat Vos gave them a battle before settling for the Silver medal in a 16-20 game. The Québec-B team of Maurice and Murielle Beauchamp won the bronze over Saskatchewan’s Lois Kos and Brandon Watson in a 25-14 final game.

The competitions for the Senior Triples teams came to a conclusion today at the national event held in Peterborough, ON. The women’s team of Peggy Plathan, Sharon Brunelle and Patricia Walker finished with a record of 4, 4, and 1 to place 7th out of the ten provincial teams competing. The men’s team of David Simpson, George Hamilton and a substitute player from Ontario finished with a record of 3, 5, and 1. Their vice, Leon Dallas was injured close to the end of the very first game and was unable to play for the duration of the competition.

Nine teams competed for cash in the Southern Open Triples over the last weekend of August. The tournament was hosted by the Rotary Lawn Bowling Club in Calgary and featured teams and players from every club in Calgary as well as a team from Lethbridge.
And the teams walking away with the most cash were:

Second: Peter Mok, Mike O’Reilly and Ju Cho
Third: Joanna Cooper, Rod Adams and Nicole Sutton
