The Canadian Indoor Singles Championships get underway this weekend with practice time and an opening reception on Sunday.  The games are all next week concluding with the finals on Saturday.  Representing AB for the women are Jenn MacDonald, Jan Robinson, Pat Vos and Claire Day and for the men are Derek Dillon and Roger Allen.  Good luck to all the players!  To follow the results check the Bowls Canada Website.


Long Term Service Award

David Simpson, long time member of Stanley Park Lawn Bowling Club, was recognized for his many years of service to LBAA, at the Annual General Meeting in Red Deer.  He received the Long Term Service Award for his many years of service as LBAA President and board member, for his contributions on numerous committees, for his years of growing our sport through his coaching, for his commitment to participating in many provincial competitions, and for representing AB at several national events as recent as this past summer. It is our hope that David will continue to be involved for many years to come and continue to contribute with enthusiasm and passion.  Congratulations, David!

Calling for candidates!

Elections for new board members will be held on Oct. 14 at the AGM in Red Deer.  Nominations and applications are welcome until Oct. 10.  Positions open at this time are:

Vice President (2 year term)
Treasurer (2 year term)
Secretary (2 year term)
Director at Large (2 year term)
Director at Large (1 year term if approved bylaw change)

Canadian Mixed Pairs Championship

After a week in Point Claire, QC, playing in hot humid weather, the Mixed Pairs championship concluded on Tuesday.  Christie Grahame and Mary Wright from BC secured the Gold medal after strong play all week long, but our own AB Roy Riege and Pat Vos gave them a battle before settling for the Silver medal in a 16-20 game.  The Québec-B team of Maurice and Murielle Beauchamp won the bronze over Saskatchewan’s Lois Kos and Brandon Watson in a 25-14 final game.

Canadian Senior Triples come to a conclusion

The competitions for the Senior Triples teams came to a conclusion today at the national event held in Peterborough, ON.  The women’s team of Peggy Plathan, Sharon Brunelle and Patricia Walker finished with a record of 4, 4, and 1 to place 7th out of the ten provincial teams competing.  The men’s team of David Simpson, George Hamilton and a substitute player from Ontario finished with a record of 3, 5, and 1.  Their vice, Leon Dallas was injured close to the end of the very first game and was unable to play for the duration of the competition.

Southern Open Triples

Nine teams competed for cash in the Southern Open Triples over the last weekend of August.  The tournament was hosted by the Rotary Lawn Bowling Club in Calgary and featured teams and players from every club in Calgary as well as a team from Lethbridge.

And the teams walking away with the most cash were:
First:  Kevin Power, Dave Cox and and Scott Parker
Second:  Peter Mok, Mike O’Reilly and Ju Cho
Third:  Joanna Cooper, Rod Adams and Nicole Sutton
Fourth:  Robert Rodzinyak, Al McGarty and Esther Rodzinyak

Northern Open Triples Tournament

Twelve teams competed for cash in the Northern Open Triples tournament this past weekend. The Royal Lawn Bowling club did a great job of hosting the teams again as they competed in hot temperatures under clear skies.

And the teams walking away with the most cash prizes were:
First: Jan Robinson, Bev Robinson and Dwayne Hauck
Second: Dolly Gouw, Pete Wilson and Valerie McCaffrey
Third: Doug Wilson, June Ji and Tara Wilson
Fourth: Cecilia Gillespie, Alexis Gallacher and Kiera Schaelow

Alberta Men’s Team receives the Cy English Plaque

For the second time in three years the Alberta Men’s A team tallied more points than any other provincial team through the round robin games of the Canadian Championships.  Playing strong and earning big results all week long were Pat Bird, Lyall Adams, Francis Standen, Herman Cooper, Roy Riege, Jon MacDonald, Keith Johnson, Greg Wilson and Derek Dillon.  Huge congratulations men!
